Miami Beach to launch car share program

Getting a car to drive on South Beach may soon be about as easy as ordering a pizza. The city of Miami Beach is launching a program that will allow tourists and residents to rent sedans, SUVs and eventually electric cars on an as-need basis for as brief and cheap as $9 an hour.

The service, provided through Hertz On Demand, kicks off Tuesday when 20 cars will become available in eight parking garages located mostly in South Beach. The city’s fleet could eventually reach 100 cars.

Miami Heat record dramatic win over Atlanta Hawks

MIAMI’S Chris Bosh and Mario Chalmers stepped up in the absence of superstars LeBron James and Dwayne Wade to deliver the Heat a dramatic 116-109 NBA win over Atlanta on Thursday.

Bosh had 33 points with 14 rebounds, while Chalmers scored 29 points, including five in the third overtime, as the Heat pulled away for a gutsy victory on the road.

“Coach said I had to be aggressive,” said Chalmers, who erupted for 22 of his points after the third quarter.

Why Miami’s best offense is good defense

http://a.espncdn.com/photo/2011/1228/nba_g_james_576.jpgThere’s an old cliche in sports that says that a team’s best offense is a good defense. Coaches usually like to schedule a lightly regarded opponent to ease their players back into the rigors of competition. Not Georgetown Coach Terri Williams-Flournoy. More >

Miami-Maryland season opener shrouded in mystery

http://www.washingtonpost.com/rf/image_296w/WashingtonPost/Content/Production/Blogs/terrapins-insider/Images/Miami_Camp_Begins_Football_0cdff.jpg?uuid=I326As_rEeCEdlGBWQpkBgA football game will be played Labor Day night between Miami and Maryland. Let me know if you have any feel whatsoever about how this game will play out. Better yet, let me know if you can remember the last college football game — whether Maryland played in it or not — you had less of a handle on.

Even without any off-field drama, the game promised to be shrouded in some mystery anyway because it is the season opener between two schools with new head coaches. Then add in the fact that Maryland is trying to preserve the element of surprise as much as possible with a tightly controlled preseason camp in which information about schemes, position battles and depth chart moves is limited. Since the moment Miami devoted a second-round pick to him on April 23, rookie linebacker Koa Misi almost immediately was linked to one of the most popular and talented defensive players in Dolphins history.

Fair or not, this was the player charged with the task of replacing Jason Taylor as the team’s outside linebacker — an assumption based purely on the position he plays, the early pick used to land him and the timing of his arrival.
