Miami-Dade initiatives target childhood obesity

With childhood obesity a growing concern, Miami-Dade preschools and schools are making it easier this year for students to get a fresh, healthy meal at breakfast, lunch and snack time, too.
An estimated 17 percent of American kids ages 2 to 19 are obese, and the Miami-Dade County Health Department received almost $15 million in federal stimulus funds for obesity prevention through the Community Putting Prevention to Work program. More >
Friends remember victim of crash

Celeste Gaitan, former Venezuelan model and fashion icon, loved to showcase the latest styles from her boutique to neighbors in the West Kendall strip mall.
But the shop, Celeste’s Boutique, which Gaitan worked so hard to keep open during tough times, is now a memorial for the 33-year-old woman, killed Tuesday in a freak traffic accident along with another woman sitting on a bench. More >
