The deal to have The Miami Herald move to Doral involves not only leasing the office building that was once home to the U.S. Southern Command in Doral, but buying an adjacent site for its printing plant and distribution operations. “Drum roll, please… the big announcement is finally here!” states Publisher David Landsberg’s Jan. 26 memo to employees.

“We’re on the move – and starting in May 2013, our new headquarters will be located at 3511 NW 91 Ave., on the 15-acre site that was formerly home to the U.S. Southern Command.”

Getting a car to drive on South Beach may soon be about as easy as ordering a pizza. The city of Miami Beach is launching a program that will allow tourists and residents to rent sedans, SUVs and eventually electric cars on an as-need basis for as brief and cheap as $9 an hour.

The service, provided through Hertz On Demand, kicks off Tuesday when 20 cars will become available in eight parking garages located mostly in South Beach. The city’s fleet could eventually reach 100 cars.

Miami Dolphins’ next coach will experience doubt

Jeff Fisher, as if to underline his credentials for heroically rescuing those in need, stopped his vehicle the other night outside Nashville to lend aid to two teenagers who had been involved in a single-car accident. True story.

A few days earlier Fisher could have come to the rescue of two other men also involved in a wreck and perhaps in even greater need — Stephen Ross and Jeff Ireland, their wreck the Dolphins — but the coach of course chose the St. Louis Rams instead. Another true story.

Time for Big Z to step up to the plate in Miami

The Marlins re-signed Greg Dobbs on Tuesday, giving him $3 million for two years.

They agreed to a trade for Carlos Zambrano on Wednesday, and there went Dobbs’ at-bats.

Dobbs is one of the best pinch hitters going, and it speaks to the Marlins’ seriousness about winning that they brought back the 33-year-old third baseman, who spent 2011 with them after being with the Phillies from 2007 to 2010. But I’m seeing 2012 as the year when Ozzie Guillen empowers Zambrano in a way the Cubs never would.
